As a Colorado elopement photographer, I’ve helped couples plan and photograph wildflower elopements all across the state—and I can confidently say there’s nothing quite like it.
I’ll walk you through when and where to elope for wildflowers in Colorado, plus practical planning tips to ensure your day is stress-free, meaningful, and absolutely stunning.

When Is Wildflower Season in Colorado?
Timing is everything when planning a wildflower elopement. Colorado’s bloom season varies depending on elevation, snowpack, and weather, but here’s a general breakdown:
Late May – Early June
Lower elevations and foothills
Great for couples who want greenery without high-altitude hikes
Locations near Boulder, Colorado Springs, Denver, and the Front Range of the Rockies
Late June – July (Peak Season)
Prime time for alpine wildflower elopements. The most abundant wildflower meadows I find are nearby bodies of water with open views surrounding them. Not so much the forested areas!
Meadows explode with color: columbine, Indian paintbrush, lupine, sunflowers, and so many other amazing alpine flower varieties.
Ideal for mountain towns like Crested Butte, Rocky Mountain National Park, Vail, Steamboat Springs, the San Juans, and Telluride.
Early-mid August
Higher elevations are still blooming (above 11,000 feet), though it is more subdued. I have found wildflowers on 14ers in early August before!
Fewer crowds, especially midweek.
Perfect for couples wanting cooler temperatures and fall-adjacent vibes, especially if we’re going mid-late August at high altitude.
Pro tip: Snowpack impacts bloom timing every year. Working with a local photographer helps you choose a location that’s peaking at the right time. A local photographer will have good insight from the winter’s snowpack throughout the state.
Best Places for a Colorado Wildflower Elopement
Here are some of my favorite areas for wildflower elopements in Colorado:
Crested Butte
Often called the Wildflower Capital of Colorado, Crested Butte offers rolling meadows, dramatic mountain backdrops, and some of the most vibrant blooms in the state. Perfect for couples wanting iconic alpine scenery.
Rocky Mountain National Park
RMNP is ideal for couples seeking accessible trails, lakes, and mountain views. Wildflowers typically peak from late June through July. Permits are required, but the scenery is worth it.
San Juan Mountains (Telluride, Ouray, Silverton)
If you want dramatic peaks paired with lush meadows, the San Juans are unbeatable. This region is stunning for adventurous elopements and sunrise or sunset ceremonies.
Summit County
Breckenridge, Dillon, and Frisco offer beautiful wildflower hikes with easier access and amenities—great for couples balancing adventure with comfort.
Steamboat Springs
How to Plan a Wildflower Elopement (Without the Stress)
1. Choose your photographer!
Your photographer can do more than show up with a camera which is why you should pick a photographer before you start planning any other aspect of your elopement day. Your photographer can:

Wildflower elopements are unpredictable in the best way, and having someone who knows the terrain, seasons, and lighting makes all the difference.
2. Choose the Right Location for Your Vibe
Do you want an easy-access meadow or a hike-to alpine overlook? Some wildflower locations require permits or specific trail access—this is where a photographer with local knowledge becomes invaluable.
3. Plan Around Light & Weather
Mountain weather changes fast. Early morning or weekday elopements give you softer light, fewer crowds, and more flexibility if storms roll in.
4. Follow Leave No Trace
Wildflowers are extremely delicate. I always stay on trails when required, avoid trampling blooms, and choose ceremony spots that protect the landscape. Ethical elopements make better stories—and better photos.There are often trails and social paths you can take through alpine meadows to help avoid killing the fragile environment surrounding you. By simply stepping on the flowers you can kill them and they do take 5-10 years of undisturbed growth in order to regenerate and come back. Please care for the environment!
5. Wear the Right Attire
Flowy dresses photograph beautifully in wildflower meadows, but sturdy footwear is key. Balancing style and comfort for hiking and being outside on uneven terrain is key. I recommend a long dress so you can wear your comfortable footwear of choice underneath! If you are wearing a suit, picking out breathable materials such as linen is key. Wool keeps you warm, but most summer days in Colorado in the mountains can range from 70-90 degrees depending on the exact location. Layering is never a bad idea!
