5 Things Portrait Photographers Should Do this Spring

Well, despite what the groundhog says, spring is (finally) right around the corner! So dig out those rain boots and get ready for spring with pro Becca Shunkwiler's tips for perfect spring photography sessions:

1. Do some spring cleaning...for your website!

Outdoor portrait session bookings will only increase once the weather gets warmer. Take the time before the spring "officially" arrives to solicit great reviews from your best clients, to finish those last blog posts from last year, and to update your online portfolios.

2. Host a seasonal promotion.

You aren't the only one who will be celebrating once spring has sprung. Set yourself apart from the crowd with a festive sale or giveaway. Try a seasonal promotion centered around St. Patrick's Day (March 17), the First Day of Spring (March 20), Easter (April 16), or Mother's Day (May 14) to book up your spring sessions in a snap.

3. Explore new locations.

Do some research on some brand new locations for spring 2017, like "pick-your-own" farms, orchards, wildflower fields, or botanical gardens. Create your list of 3-5 new locations to scout out now, so you'll be ready to test them out on the first beautiful day of the year. Rained out? Bring a bloom (with permission, of course) inside to add a pop of color to your images.

4. Prepare for the weather.

The weather can be tricky in the spring, so buy some cheap umbrellas and keep them in your car. If it starts to rain during a shoot, you'll have some cute (and practical) props on hand. In addition, keep some plastic bags or a shower curtain in your camera bag. If the ground is muddy or wet, your subjects can sit on a dry surface that can be easily edited out later.

5. The sun's coming back. Take advantage of it!

Daylight Savings Time begins March 14th - that means more natural light and more golden hours. Be sure to adjust your shooting schedule and your camera's time stamp accordingly.
