Every year, my dad tells me not to get him anything for Father’s Day because having me as his daughter is a gift enough (cue the aww’s). But, I want to ensure my dad knows how appreciated he is, so I always like to give him a little something, even if it’s just an afternoon together! Here are five experiences you can gift to your dad this year.

Do a tech lesson.

Not every dad is technologically savvy, so it’s worth it to take an afternoon to teach your dad some new tricks. You can then make communication with your dad even easier! I taught my dad how to use message effects on his iPhone, and then he proceeded to use them for 48 hours straight with every message he sent.

Father and son looking through photo book

Go through family photos.

Sit with your dad, and learn some family history! As you go through family photos, start compiling some to make a Photo Book together. It’ll be something you’ll both treasure for years to come.

Tour a local brewery or distillery (and then treat him some drinks).

Craft breweries and distilleries are seeing a renaissance in popularity across the country. Find one near you, and set up a tour for you and Dad. Then, don’t remember to treat him to a couple of drinks or a bottle to take home.

Dad with his family

Try one of his hobbies with him.

Does your dad like to golf? Build model trains? Take a sunset walk? Even if a seven-mile hike isn’t your ideal Sunday, make an effort to do whatever his activity of choice is – it’s his day!

Father and son with photo prints

Send him something thoughtful.

Can’t quite make it home to see your dad? You can always send a thoughtful gift delivered before Father’s Day. Even just sending some 5x7” Photo Prints with a note can bring on the water works from Dad.

Thanks to Self Image Photography, Sarah Botta Photography, and Jenna Mace Photography for the images in this post!

Memorial Day, the unofficial start of summer, is right around the corner, so that means beach days are upon us. I, for one, can’t think of a better way to spend a weekend afternoon than with my toes in the sand.

Not all beaches are created equal – some are family-friendly destinations, some have caves & coves for more exploration. Check out these beaches in the US that will look absolutely perfect on your Instagram feed.

Good Harbor Beach, Massachusetts

Just a hop away from Boston, Good Harbor Beach is an idyllic location for long walks, body surfing, or lounging. Plus, at low tide, you can walk out to Salt Island and get another view. Photo by @lindsaygalvinphotography

Black Sands Beach, California

If you’re anything like me, you have a set schedule of printing so your memories don’t sit forgotten on your Instagram feed or an old, dusty hard drive.

The question that can overwhelm me sometimes is: what size should I print my photos? It can be hard to choose when there are more than 60 options! Here are a few ideas for your next printing session.

Prints hanging on string display

If you’re filling up a shoebox, photo album, or wall grid…

Go small – think 4x6”s or 5x7”s. These sizes are perfect for tossing in an album or stacking a shoebox, plus they’re easy to switch out in your photo grid.

Psst: I also like to print out 4x6”s of me & my friends to send to them in a card. It’s a thoughtful keepsake for them, plus a guarantee you’ll hold a spot on their fridge.

If you’re displaying school photos, portraits, or selfies…

Try small Prints, like 8x10”s or 5x7”s. As an example, my grandmom has a whole wall dedicated to her grandkids – it’s 11 framed 8x10”s in a row with our most recent school photos. Since we’ve all long-since graduated, it’s now a testament to bad haircuts, confused skin complexions, and our ultimate glow-ups.

Hanging Prints on the wall

If you’re starting a gallery wall…

Of course, this varies based on the wall space in your home, but if you really want to make an impact, use medium and large Prints. Start with 11x14”s and 16x20”s – which are even good sizes for most smartphone photos. You can even add larger pieces – like 20x24”s or 30x40”s – as the focal point of your wall.

Large Print on display in bedroom

If you have a ton of travel shots…

Your travel photos – beaches, landscapes, architecture, nature, sunsets, et cetera – definitely deserve to be big. (At least 20×24″!) Show off your colorful adventures, and give your guests extreme FOMO.

If you want a display that’s super easy to add to…

Use squares! If you’re not quite sure of your vision yet, square Prints are easy to add to as you please. All you have to do is make sure you’re even on both sides of your grid! 8×8″s are a great medium size to start on any wall.

Artwork on display

If you’re exhibiting your work…

This can vary depending on the competition or exhibit, but, if you have the choice, go large. There’s something really special about seeing your work displayed with spotlights on it as a 30x40”. As judges, attendees, and fellow exhibitors pass by, they’ll be enamored with your photos!

What are you waiting for? Your memories don’t belong on your hard drive – print them out today!

What’s one moment that parents dream of when their children are born? Seeing their son or daughter take those few steps across the commencement stage, get their diploma, and move the tassel from one side to the other.

Now, it’s here: graduation season is officially upon us! Whether your grad is moving on from high school or college, it’s a huge milestone in their lives and should be celebrated appropriately.

Most schools have a designated photographer for senior portraits (or maybe you selected your own!), leaving you with a ton of great shots of your favorite grad. Don’t let these beautiful photos go unseen!

Wallet Prints featuring senior grad

Give them to family members

You may have an 8x10” Framed Print of your grad  already displayed in your living room. Or, if you’re my mom, you have two 24x36” Framed Prints featured right when someone enters the house, which is not at all embarrassing. But, why not share the love with other family members, too? Wallet Prints are great for grandparents, aunts & uncles, or even those family friends who watched them grow up.

Graduation Cap Stickers

Use as grad cap decoration

Small Prints, like a couple of 4x4” squares, are perfect for your grad to decorate their cap. No matter where you find a seat in the audience, you’ll be able to pick out your grad among the crowd!

Cards announcing the graduate

Announce your grad in style

Pick your favorite from your son or daughter’s photo session and place it front and center on a Graduation Announcement card. They’re the perfect way to give everyone an update on your grad’s next steps.

Guests signing Graduation guest books

Add to grad party decor

Give your grad party some personal touches and use those great photos you already have! 5x7” Prints can be mounted and used as centerpieces. Or, have your guests sign a grad board or Photo Book with their best wishes.

How do you plan to celebrate your grad? Tell us in the comments!

You’ve seen these eye-catching engineered style prints all over social media and we have to say, they are some of our favorites!  These statement-making images are the perfect addition to your space that needs a little love. If you aren’t sure how to create these fun pics, we’re here to help.

Find a mostly white wall.

Baby smilng

Taking the photo against a white or solid colored wall makes the editing process (explained later) much easier! Natural lighting is always great so try and find a space adjacent to a window that gets plenty of sunlight. The beauty of these images come from the simplicity of the editing so try not to stress over finding the perfect backdrop.

Mind your negative space.

Engineer Style Print

These images all have a particular style with lots of negative space in the background. Keep that in mind when determining the placement of your subject in the photo.

Take LOTS of pictures.

outtake photos

To keep the picture looking authentic, snap away! There will be tons of outtakes but, that is ok. The more options you have to choose from the better. Make jokes, tell a funny story, share a memory, or whatever you need to do to try to capture the essence of your subject in a real moment.

Edit your photo!

Before:

Girl smiling with a flower

After:

Google Photos Editing

We found it easiest to use Google Photos to edit these images. First, click on the photo and select the editing icon and use one of the preset filters to turn the image black and white. Next, select “basic adjustments.” Here you will want to focus on is upping the contrast and the exposure to create a subject that really pops. Also play with the shadows and black and white editing tools to achieve that statement look.

Print and frame!

kids in front of framed photos

We think the bigger the better when it comes to “engineered prints.” This really lets the personality shine as well as makes a huge statement. For reference, these are 24×36” Maple Framed Prints! If you are into DIY you can always order Prints and then frame them yourself!

Vanquisher of under-the-bed monsters. Wiper of runny noses. Creator of science project volcanoes. Holder of hands, post-breakup. Moms carry these titles, and so many more. For Mother’s Day this year, celebrate the women who have been with you through it all with a truly meaningful gift.

Try a cooking class

As someone who is constantly going from one activity to the other, my mom loves when she can nail down time with me. One of our favorite ways to spend an afternoon is to take a cooking class. (We’ve made everything from gnocchi to caramel cheesecake!) Quality time and delicious food are a great combination.

Great-grandmother and great-granddaughter sit with photo book

Create a Photo Book

Whether you just got married or you want to pack a lifetime’s worth of memories in one place, create a Photo Book and fill it with the best pictures of you and your mom (or grandmother!).

Buy a gift that keeps on giving

Let your Mother’s Day gift keep going month after month – try a subscription box! There are so many options that are perfect for any mama, whether she’s a wine enthusiast, a huge bookworm, or obsessed with flowers.

Acrylic Block sitting on desk

Personalize a piece of decor

Really dazzle your mom with decor: print one of your favorite photos in an Acrylic Block. With the crystal clear, hand-polished Acrylic, your mom will be showing off to everyone in the neighborhood.

Lean into some self-care

There’s nothing better than some self-care! Help Mom relax by getting her an essential oil diffuser and some scents for her to try out. (Personally, I love popping in some lavender after a particularly stressful day.)

Child holding compact mirror

Make something unregiftable

Mom will feel very touched to receive a truly custom gift. Put the best photo of the two of you on a Keychain she can take with her, a Mug she can use at the office, or a Compact Mirror she can keep in her purse.

How will you make Mom feel special this Mother’s Day?

We love the look of a well-designed gallery wall. Displaying your favorite moments is the perfect way to turn your blank wall into a beautifully unique design element in your space! Creating the perfect gallery wall is definitely a daunting task and at times can seem a little more science than art. We’re sharing some inspiration from our creative community to give you some ideas for that wall that needs a little TLC.

@houseon77th used six 20×20” Black Wood Frames with a white mat. She used black and white images in the frames to make her couch and rug pop!

gallery wall in nursery

To create this unique corner in her home @restoring_home had some modern prints framed in multiple sizes, colors, and mediums. Two 8×12” Frames, two 16×20” Frames, one 20×30” Maple Frame and one 11×14” Metal Print.

living room gallery wall

These unique prints were collected by @simplysoutherncottage town’s historian (how amazing?!). She then had  six 16×20” Maple Frames printed with no mat and hung them on her gorgeous ship lap wall!

Canvas Prints

We love the gallery wall full of friends @maisondecinq created for her daughters work space. These 12×18 Canvas Prints make the perfect statement on her wall.

@nissalynninteriors refreshed her dining room with some beautiful Canvas Prints. To recreate this look you will need two 10×20” Canvas Prints, five 12×18” Canvas Prints, and two 16×24” Canvas Prints.

If you’re a content creator looking for a small, versatile, and portable light source, the new Lume Cube AIR is worth checking out.

Both amateur and pro photographers and videographers will find it a handy addition to their camera bag accessories.

Lume Cube AIR

Small but mighty, the golf-ball-sized product puts out a surprisingly bright light source that can be controlled via Bluetooth on their app or the on/off switch which also has three brightness settings.

Side view of Lume Cube AIR

I love the square shape which makes it easy to place down on a flat surface. But, it also has a ¼-20” thread for attaching to a light stand or an optional cell phone attachment. Plus, it’s magnetic making it easy to mount on any metal surface. It’s even waterproof down to a depth of 30 feet!

Lume Cube AIR

It has a built in rechargeable battery that can be charged using the included USB cable. Lume Cube states you’ll get about 2.5 hours of use at 50% power. Realistically, at full power, that would be reduced to under an hour.

Complete set of Lume Cube AIR tools

In addition to the USB cable, other included accessories are a lanyard and white and orange diffusers. The white for standard daylight balanced use and the orange for CTO correction.

Side view of Lume Cube AIR with protective case

In addition to its more typical uses, I found it useful as a flashlight, and also to temporarily light a scene making it easier to focus and then turning it off.

We’re also experimenting with using it as an accent light during our product photography photo sessions!

This versatile and handy device will certainly fill a need for many photographers. At $70, it’s a pretty nifty and affordable present for that special photographer in your life!

Nations Photo Lab is not affiliated with Lume Cube. All opinions belong to the author.
