Personalize Your Home Office Space with a DIY Gallery Wall / April 05, 2016
Tips and TricksInspiration
Around this time last year, I found out that I had been accepted to business school. Even though I was SUPER excited, I clearly had no idea how a full-time job and a part-time graduate school program would impact my everyday life. Once the semester started, my sleep hours dwindled and my free time disappeared. I felt that I was starting to fall behind. At the very least, I didn’t feel like myself.
As I started my second semester, I knew I’d have to make a change. I knew that I had it in me to be more efficient with schoolwork, but I just didn’t know how. The turning point for me was deciding to create a space at home in which I actually wanted to get work done.
Anyone who spends countless hours at a desk knows the value of a workspace that’s functional. What is typically a little trickier is finding and personalizing a place where you feel focused, calm, and inspired.
With a little help from our friends at Wayfair and from the fantastic folks here at NPL, we assembled the perfect home office for any creative soul. Here are our takeaways:
Choose a place in your home that makes you happy.
For me, it’s this room here, right next to the deck. It gets the most sunlight out of all the rooms in the house, which makes me feel like I’m closer to nature (even when I’m elbow-deep in accounting homework).
The best news is, you can still create a beautiful place to get work done in a small amount of space. This space we used is less than 10’ wide! So even if your workspace can’t take up an entire room, you can still make yourself a cozy corner to tackle work at home.
2. Select your favorite piece first. Then design around it.
When shopping on sites like Wayfair, it’s easy to get overeager after looking at all of the gorgeous home decor pieces on each and every page. Our recommendation: Go with your gut. Once you find anything (seriously, anything) that you cannot live without, help that piece determine the “vibe” for the remainder of the room.
For us, we couldn’t get enough of this beachy sunburst mirror. That initial choice informed the a modern, clean, and organic touch that we lent to each of the remaining decor choices.
Word to the wise: Don’t forget to measure your space ahead of time (everything from the wall width to the dimensions of the furniture)! When ordering online, it’s important to seek out this information before hitting “add to cart,” and to factor those details into your decisions about decorative accents.
3. Make it personal.
A gallery wall is so much more than a focal point when it’s part of your home office. Each item in the collection represents the pieces of your life and personality that you’ll be looking to for inspiration, motivation, and peace while you’re burning the midnight oil.
Nothing complements your stylish decor choices like images you love. Plus, incorporating a variety of photo products really works with the “mixed media” feel of the room.
To assemble our gallery wall, we followed an easy, three-step process:
After receiving our three gallery wall statement pieces from Wayfair, we ordered our photo products. To achieve an interesting mix of texture and dimension, we chose a variety of sizes of Canvas Gallery Wraps, Metal Prints, Framed Prints, and Gallery Blocks.
Once all of the pieces came in, we created 5-10 arrangements on a flat surface, to see how the artwork fit together. Our favorite combinations brought out the blues we loved in the decor we chose, and complemented the paint color perfectly.
After choosing our favorite configurations, we busted out the hammer and the drill, and hung everything up on the wall behind the desk.
Heading into a space like this made it infinitely easier to feel organized, which weirdly enough has made me BE more organized. Not only that, but I didn’t dread doing my homework as much; I actually enjoyed spending time in this place…
...and you know what? It’s only Tuesday, and my homework for the week is already finished. If that’s not a decor-induced miracle, I’m not quite sure what is.
